Maria has been teaching teachers since 2006, making anatomy accessible, and imparting the foundations for modifying and adapting yoga poses and practices to the needs of individuals. Classes with Maria are based on functional movement, and are very visual and fun.

Bio

Maria Kirsten, MA, eRYT500, YACEP, discovered yoga in 1988, and has been teaching yoga in Lennox Head, Australia since 2000.  Maria is originally from New York, and started her working life at a secondary school English teacher. Certified originally by Yogalates, Maria has continued to study anatomy, yoga therapy, and is a certified Yoga Therapist and registered Occupational Therapist.

Maria has been teaching teachers since 2006, making anatomy accessible, and imparting the foundations for modifying and adapting yoga poses and practices to the needs of individuals.

Classes with Maria are based on functional movement, and are very visual and fun. Students leave class feeling they understand their bodies and minds, and feeling empowered  to use yoga to age well and calm down.

Maria is a dynamic speaker and presenter. She conducts workshops in Anatomy for Yoga, Yoga Therapy, Yoga for Seniors and Yoga for Mental Health. Her Yoga For Grownups DVD is a valued resource for yoga students and yoga teachers.

A discussion of the anatomy and normal movement of the pelvis, hips and shoulders and application of that knowledge into some simple classical yoga poses.

This session looks at what older people need to live a thriving happy life, and how to design and adapt asana classes to support good balance, functional movement and  equanimity. How to make the yoga class empowering.
